Hey MT Wallet

What the honda mechanic told you is in the wrong direction. The blown rectifier will cause your stator coil to overcharge your battery and fry it. Therefore losing its ability to hold a charge. I can honestly say dude that if you are only getting a charge at 6000rpm (any charge) then your stator coil is definately dying. You said it yourself that it only used to start charging at 5000rpm but now its only charging at 6000rpm. Its needing a faster spin from the flywheel to get the same charge.

I checked my bike two days ago. At an idle of +-1200rmp it gives a charge of 13.6v under no load (no fan and lights) and about 12.6v with load (fan and lights). Then I start revving the baby slowly and she already gives me 14.8v full charge at 3000rpm and doesnt budge from 14.8v even if I take her all the way up to 9000rpm. If yours is giving you nothing at even 5000rpm as you say now dude, then your stator coil is shot and the mechanics are taking you for a ride dude and just want your money, plain and simple.

If you have another friend with a CBR900RR or any other Honda close to that model, then try taking your volt meter to him/her and check their charge reading, I can guarantee that they will have some reading already from 2000rpm or 3000rpm. Then you will know that your stator coil is definitely shot.

Duke I really appreciate that information.

And to answer your question Dinez, I am going to take it to the Honda dealer on Friday.

But now Duke has me thinking maybe I should re-consider.

Yes, it could be something as simple as the coil.   I will have to find a friend who can really test/check it for me.

What a coincidence, but my co-worker today was trying to refer me to a friend who is not a certified tech, but does know how to fix motorcycles and who doesn''t rip people off.

I''m not saying Honda will do that, but I think I''ll talk to my friend again tomorrow and find out where his buddy is located and have him look at my bike.

Thanks so much!

So Duke, if it''s the stator coil, can I just get that replaced and keep the original stator?

Is it cheap?  Where can I get one?   Installation is easy I imagine?

Not to mislead you MT, I think its your rectifier that need to be replaced. Hope your friend''s friend is a good electrician too.
I don''t think the coil for the alternator will be sold separately either.

 $276 to fix

New rectifier = $180

Labor = $96

Rectifier was over-charging and killing my battery.  Fortunately, the battery is still good and I just need a rectifier.   Parts may take a while to arrive.  It''s been a week since i dropped the bike off at Honda and no callbacks.

They did let me know early on, when I ordered my new headlight that the part was on backorder.

Told you its the rectifier. But the price is mind blowing! What with all those labour charges? They just need to remove two nuts, fix the wire and done. And I changed mine last year for the whole thing say in your currency around usd60. Please check again the whole deal dude!

+1 on the rectifier dinez74, but everything had to be checked to be sure. I hope honda checks everything thoroughly as well as I had a short in my fuse box that blew two recifiers, that the mechanics missed. Although they sit snug due to the plastic holder, the metal contacts were loose and that caused the circuit to trip.

Believe me dude, they are that expensive. In S.A. Rands. My rectifier cost me R850, then they gave me a long story about them checking the whole electrical system. I didnt know better and let them do it. They charged me R800 for labour!!! When I got home I checked the wiring on what they replaced, which was nothing. All they did was put on clips and plugged it in.

Damn stealerships, hate them.

I just want peace of mind knowing that Honda looked at the entire charging system.

At least i''m hoping they did.

The last Honda dealer I took my old, 600f2 to, which also had charging issues, they tested the system down to the volt.   The mechanic called me up and actually told me which electrical point was working and which wasn''t and how much charge it was actually making or not making.  I was impressed.   Sadly, that dealership now refuses to work on bikes older than 10 years.

I''m hoping this new dealership the bike is at, will work just as hard.

The mechanic at the old dealership did tell me that when rectifiers are changed, you also might have to change the wiring harness too.   He said that is a common problem for people who work on their own bikes, if they don''t check the wiring harness the problem can come back.

Thanks for the help Duke and Dinez!

Bike is done

Mechanic said the wiring harness was burnt and they had to replace it with a new one for around $26, no labor since it was just a plug in job.

New rectifier is in.

Total is around $276 not including tax

The bike still needs a new headlight, which has come in, they''re just waiting to install it when I give them the word.  I''m thinking I''ll wait to have them install it since I need to wait for my next paycheck.

My wife has the final say.

The headlight needs more parts

So the Honda guy is ordering them.

In the meantime he quoted me a labor charge to install the single, left headlight of $150

Is this reasonable?

The mechanic said it will take a couple hours to install and that they need to remove the front end of the bike.

I''m thinking it''s only the front fairing.    Sounds a lot to me.
