OK so I installed a new petcock (old one leaked when not in the on pos.), a new fuel cut off switch (pump wasn''t priming when key turned on), tank cleaned (fair amount of rust) and new gas.

The pump still doesn''t prime when the key is turned but does as soon as the starter is pushed. After a few seconds it fires up. It will rev to redline with small amount of hesitation. I took it around the block and it wouldn''t wind out at all, it almost died trying to go into third gear.

A year ago my friend had a stage 1 jet kit put on as well asnew headers + D&D exhaust.

Has anyone had a similar prob or suggestions on the next step to take?

Thanks in advance!

Need more info first of all. If the tank was rusted, did you check the filter in the tank, the filter inline before the pump? Air cleaner? Exhaust restrictions?
"The pump still doesn''''t prime when the key is turned but does as soon as the starter is pushed."
That is what''s supposed to happen.
How about the carbs...

When I replaced the petcock I replaced the filter as well. I just ran some seafoam through it and it runs a little better but still has no power. The inline filter is clean as well. I had read on a lot the posts about the pump priming when the key is turned not when the starter is pushed. This is the first bike I''ve owned with a fuel pump (all the rest have been grav. fed) so I was a little confused on that point.

I haven''t pulled the carbs yet to check how bad they are. The bike will at least now run past 20 and rev fairly smoothly while in nuetral.

I downloaded the specs from dynojet on which jets should be in the bike, so my next step is to pull the carbs this week.

Update:

Took off air box and carbs and this is what I found:
1. UNI air filter (not K&N as I was told)
2. Filters around the inlet Tubes (mesh cylinders in air box) rotted to falling off
Pulled carbs -
3. carbs pretty dirty (not the worst I''ve seen but dirty and strong varnish smell)
4. Main jet = 116 (was told that a stage 1 jet kit installed) - looked on dynojets site found that the 116 are used on stage 2 with drilled air box, and stock exhaust.
5. Needle jet set correctly on 3rd clip
6. Slides seemed stuck in place
7. bike has full D&D exhaust from headers back to muffler

The plan:
1. clean the &*^% out of the carbs (possibly replace all o-rings gaskets while in there).
2. replace uni with K&N filter
3. button her up and see how she runs.

Any Suggestions, warnings or advise?

IF the jest your running require an air box modification id do that as well.

no power can be a form of a very rich running situation. and if your getting more fuel and not enough air that will = no power.

I am trying to find the template described in the dynojet instructions for drilling the airbox (DIF22 insert) but have been unable to find it.

I also have been trying to find a picture of the jet kit (my needle jet looks different then what I am seeing so far. The bottom part of the needle does not taper until 1/3 up the shaft

Last I checked the kit, there is no template about drilling the airbox.  Just the carb slides.  The 3rd clip position is actually the stage 1 setting and like you mentioned the 116 is the stage 2 jets.  That setting shouldn''t be a problem.  I knocked off 1 second on my 1/4 ET by switching to the stage 1 needle setting.  I''ve always been weery of drilling the airbox.  From what I read the carbs are controlled by airbox pressure.  I''m running a full exhaust and K&N as well plus an ignition advancer.  My main jets are actually the stock 110a which is equal to Dynojet 106s about 2 sizes bigger then the stage 1 jets and runs great.

the pump turns on as soon as the key is turned, the 3rd clip on the needles is used for stage 1 and stage 2, the only difference is the main jet size.

What are your mixture screws set at? Should be 2.5 turns.
How do your plugs look? Are they fouled?

So I finally had time to tear down the carbs and clean them. I now have clean carbs with actually moving slides and unclogged jets. I just buttoned everything up about 2 hrs ago with the new K&N filter and started the bike. It took about 20 sec before she purred to life. The bike sounds great, loud but great. I took it for a spin around the block.

This is what I found:
Idles fine and starts to rev smoothly until 1/4 throttle
1/4 throttle it starts to loose power and stutter = needle jet out of position (currently 3rd setting from top) - too much fuel right?
I try to let it slowly build to see if it will clear up and run wide open but it wouldn''t make it to full throttle = main jet too large, but since I couldn''t get it there I don''t know. (main jet 116)

Plan:
start with needle jet move to position 2nd from the top (less fuel right) and see how it does.

Any suggestion on what I might be missing would be appreciated.

No, I took out the mesh tubes and left everything open to the new K&N filter. I was afraid to drill the box (can''t undo it).

I wouldn''t drill any holes in the lid.  If anything I would try to find some smaller main jets to match the position of the stage 1 needle settings.  I have a full exhaust, filter as well and I''m running the stock 110 main jets from the factory which are actually about 2 sizes bigger than the stage 1 dynojet mains.

I went on the dynojet site and it seems that you can order just the mains in any size for $2 per. I was going to mess around wit the needle position and rig a small fuel cell up so I can leave the tank off. I believe I can get to the needle jets without pulling the carbs just have to move throttle cables and choke cable to get to them.

This is a rough week so I don''t know when I''ll get to it.

I was really hope that all it needed was a really good cleaning. I still haven''t seen what this bike can do. When My friend owned this bike I wasn''t too impressed but I don''t think he ever had it running right. When we rode together my nighthawk(stock) seemed to easily out accelerate the CBR, which I think is lighter and makes a little more power.

In the end I''m not looking for litter bike performance but a fun bike to ride.

right but stage 2 calles for a drilled airbox. so if youre not doing that, I would go ahead and order the stage 1 mains.

I downloaded the dynojet info sheet and it refers to an insert template (DDIF22) that I don''t have for drilling the airbox. So far I haven''t found anyone who has used this template or even heard of it.

Q. Is there any easy way to see if a drilled air box is the answer (ie leaving the lid off or something like that to simulate same effect)?
