Just curious as to what speed/gear combo gets you the best MPG''s.  I''m pretty disapointed in my mpg''s.  With the mods in my sig, I normally get about 36-38mpg.  Had the bike for 2 years and cracked 40mpg once in 7k miles.  I commute about 22 miles round trip to work mostly side roads where I run from 35-50 mph.  I usually keep the rpm''s between 4500 and 6000, and don''t hot rod it all that much.

Would I do better at higher rpms? or lower? Or what should I do to improve?

Everything but the exhaust is stock (air filter, gears, sprockets) on my 2000 F4 and I get about 46mpg consistantly. Most of my riding is coutnry roads with few stops and cruising about 60-70mph though. Mine is still under 12k miles so that may be some of it too. I would say the biggest thing against your mpg''s is the jet kit...I''ve heard those hurt a lot..Hope this helps ya..

I too commute about 22 miles round trip from home to work.  I get between 45 -48 mpg using 91 octane gas.  My bike runs about 6000 rpm at 80 mph and about 5500 rpms at 70 mph.  Usually ride about 75 mph to work and back.

Your jet kit is most likely the problem. More fuel used = less mileage, though there can be a balance with the extra power.

Man I wish I could pull that kinda mpg''s!!  I really didn''t buy the bike for mileage lol, but I figured it''d be a good side effect.  I''m just kidna disapointed.  On the other hand, it''s one of the faster 600cc bikes I''ve ridden, probably thanks some to that jet kit.  I''d just like to crack 40 a few times though...

I''m a bit frustrated with the way people use the words "jet kit". It is not a magical beast that gives horsepower. You jet a bike to get the air/fuel mixture correct. If the mixture is correct, you don''t need a jet kit.

You need to rejet the bike IF the mixture is not right. That happens when you change elevation, you have a new/clean/dirty/better flowing air filter, or you changed the exhaust.

Other things can cause symptoms of poor gas mixture, like a kinked fuel line, out of sync carbs, valves that need adjusting, worn spark plugs, flat battery, stuck choke, stuck float etc. These are not solved by a jet kit. These are solved by fixing the problem.,

Rant mode off.

I have charts in my photo gallery of different gear ratios and speed for the F4.

The best mpg you can get is easy throttle hand, and the right sprockets for the job. -1, +7 is great for stunting, but not great for highway touring. Unnecessarily high revs = poor gas mileage.

On my F4 I get 35-45 mpg. That is with an absolutely correct odometer, and consistent measurement of fuel. I get the best mileage at ~45-50mph on back roads touring, the worst mileage at 65mph+ on back roads squidding.
