Clean and lube the chain every 500 miles or so. They last between 10,000 and 70,000 miles. The sprockets should be replaced along with the chain. Worn down sprockets wear down new chains, and worn down chains wear down new sprockets.

Change the oil whenever you want, at least every 6,000 miles. I do mine every 3,000 because it''''s relatively cheap for the peace of mind. Only use motorcycle oil. Car oil that says "energy efficient" will make your clutch slip and isn''''t meant to stand up to the stresses applied by a high-revving wet-clutch machine.

Brake fluid is once every two years I believe, but it doesn''''t hurt to bleed your brakes every couple of months.

You can tell a tire is bad by cracks or if it''''s worn down to 2/32 of an inch of tread left. The cracks can be on the sidewall or along the tread of the tire, and they''''ll be very small. Having a "squared-off" tire can be hazardous as well since the bike will suddenly fall into turns.

Check your cables (clutch, throttle, choke)) to make sure they''re not fraying and going bad. Having any of those break on you isn''t much fun.

I was sitting in a dentists chair recently & he had a small sign on the wall that read ''Maintenance is cheap, its the Neglect that gets Expensive''. & apart from thinking he was a smug prick, its a good motto for bikes to, Get yourself a manual, stick to the maintenance schedule, most things take bugger all time, you will learn much more about your bike (& spot anything thats wrong before it becomes a problem).
