Hey all, Just went and got my permit to ride, according to those crazy people at the DMV i can now ride around legally. I have been looking around for a good bike to fit my budget and give me a good starting bike with enough; power, comfort and a good working bike. Well, last night i went to look at a 1989 CBR 600 Hurricane over on the other side of Arizona. (northern AZ.) well i finally found the place and was amazed at how well the bike fit and felt. It ran smooth, but i'm still going to tear it down over the weekend and check everything out. I go tonight to bring the cash and place the offer for it. Really excited about this bike, If anyone has any doubt's or anything that i should be looking out for, (remember i'm still a "Noob") i would appreciate it. I've been riding bikes my whole life, from dirtbikes up in oregon to my dads old indian. I know what to look for in comfort and control, but i'm a little concerned about something he and i talked about and was hoping to get an answer before tonight. He told me that when he drove it, it would sometimes "stall for a second" around 8k rpms, then just take off like normal. I was thinking maybe it's the carb's? I will probably take it in to get it checked out, I mean it's worth the 50 bucks any way you think about it. Anyways, lemme know what you guys think. And if any of you guys here in AZ wanna go ride, lemme know. ~Caleb

ok so, i bought the bike. it's pretty good, the blinker in the rear didnt work on the right side. and it's got some good damange to the plastics, the speedo doesnt work, and there are no front blinkers. so i got it home and felt stupid for even driving it home. but i needed to get it to a place where i could tinker with it. got the blinkers in the rear working and i've already ordered new front blinkers for it and the wiring for that doesnt bother me. i'm very well inclined with electronics. and i'm looking for new plastics for it. but one thing that i need is help with the speedometer. all the other electronics work fine, but i'm looking for help with checking out the speedometer. I traced the cable down to the front tire(i think, pretty sure.) and didnt find it disconnected anywhere. do any of you know where i can find a guide for this or someone who could tell me what to look for to properly trouble shoot it? thanks in advance for any help i really appreciate anything you guys can tell me. ps.. i love the bike!

if you plan on keeping this bike, invest in the honda shop manual. it has everything in there to diagnose and troubleshoot any problem you may run into. as for the speedo, remove wheel from forks and check the inside of the speedo assembly to make sure the gearing isn't worn out. or remove the indicator assembly, turn over and remove the cable, try to spin the pin to see if speedo registers. it's one or the other. best guess is speedo assembly is worn out.

Your on a good track. michigan_313 is right about the Speedo cable. The stumbling is probably just do to the carbs a good cleaning and carb sink should take care of the problem. You might want to invest in new NGK plugs and wires and a new fuel filter too.

Im a former owner of an 89 600 Hurricane.I just sold it to make room in my garage for a 03 600.But i do have to say i bought my 600 with 5k miles and sold it at a lil over 24k and after about 9 years. Its the best starter bike for the bux.I had some idling problems last year and couldnt get around em.I took it to my local Honda dealer and gave them a 1000 dollar limit. When i got that thing back it RIPPPED.So sometimes ya have to give it to the ones who know as far as carbs are concerned.I tried but lacked the tech expertise those folks have.As far as plastics are concerned.I found a lower left cowl at Denniskirk.com and i think they make the uppers too.The only downfall is they come in plain ole black.I had a custom yellow painter so the black panel stood out but it was functional. If anything that nachine will take you to the edge if you let it.Its a great ride and congrats on your buy.

i just bought my 87 hurricane about 2 months ago, had some electrical issues with the blinkers and tail lights. bad thing about a 20 year old bike is somebody has had 20 years to mess with it. but overall i love this bike. more than enough power for a first bike. i got mine for 1600.

cool thanks for the replies guys, i've been messing with it for a little while and got it legal first off. that was my main priority. now i need to start going through and replacing plugs, wiring and the like, get it tip top and then i can start worrying about the plastics.
