we have done that with my friends 5inch one..they are kinda fast 
and this one will probably just take your hand..hes kinda mean. so i named him bruce. like the big shark off of finding nemo

Are they legal?
My uncle had one many years ago, about 6 or 7 inches and it took a chunk out of his pinky finger while he was feeding it. Jumped out of the tank quick and he didn''t even have time to pull back. it eventually commited suicide, he found it laying on the ground (he thinks his wife did it though she hated the thing).

Throw a live guppy in there and see what happens - piranhas prefer live food.....
I have a friend who has half a dozen - he breeds guppies in a separate tank for food.....

I had two Oscars in college, I had an extra tank for feeders, they got HUGE and vicious... those were fun fish to own.
