All the threads going up about crappy drivers and i am about to drive three hours down the interstate with holiday traffic.  Any pointers of what to watch for, i live in the an hour from the interstate and this will be my first time riding the bike on it.

Pay more attention than when you drive a car.  Take frequent breaks to keep your mind alert.  NO BALL BEARINGS

riding a bike is dangerous whether your going on a 3 hour trip on the interstate, or going down the street to the grocery store.  Gear up, and ride like they cant see you.  I make a trip up to milwaukee from illinois atleast twice a month (about an hour and a half each way) and the only close calls i really have are people about to switch into my lane while on their cell phones (pretty standard).  I was nervous the first time i went up that on ramp too, but that went away within the first five minutes.

thanks guys, i dont have leather pants, but i have jacket, gloves, helmet, gloves, and boots.  The pants are heavy duty so i think they will be alright.
And i promise i wont:
kick mirrors
use ball bearings
use a collapsable baton
break windows
or yell at old people that are trying to get ice cream lol

WIND!!!

The most difficult aspect I find in long trips is the amount of wind on the open highway.  On my way back from Erie to Pittsburgh one time (120 mi), it was so bad that it was pushing me onto the rumble strips and I had to really focus on staying in my lane.  Then it started pouring...

If the wind is constant, you can just lean into it, but sometimes it''s random and changing.  Use your legs, and stick them out in the direction the wind is coming from to help keep the bike straight.

Keep your head on a swivel. Keep your distance. Some people just love to slam on there brakes for no reason. Careful and enjoy.

If you are coming up on a car in the passing lane, and noticed they are slowing down for the car, good chance they will want to pass. Try to be in a position in the lane where the driver can see you with his mirror and you won''t be in his blind spot. This doesn''t always work so be ready to move to the outside of the lane or brake hard if he does pull out. I always try to make it a point to be seen when I am about to pass a car on the road.

It''s okay to yell at old people that are trying to get ice cream under these circumstances:

1) They are old, you are serving them, and they can''t hear
2) You are stoked at their order. "VANILLA!!! GREAT F_CKING CHOICE, MANG!!!!!"
3) You can see the granny''s boobs poking out from the bottom of her skirt.

get some earplugs too, I''ve said it before and I''ll say it again - earplugs make a HUGE difference when on the highway or riding for an extended period of time!

+1 to ear plugs and staying out of blind spots. Personally i would map out back roads and take them all the way there, highway riding is really boring. watch the weather, you dont want to get caught in the rain, rain at 70mph is like needles.

- Be the hunter ... not the hunted!!

My Ist rule that I have lived by since a 17 year old learner on my 250 honda
- Everone else on the road is out to kill me :-)

I do like most like to push it when on the open road..
Excessive speeding is not safe in most circumstances but ...... ?

Whenever I have to use interstates or large multilane freeways, I have one rule of thumb that I always use .. ( Be seen be safe ) .. to this end I always try to keep moving slightly faster the the traffic..
I find that it is far safer to be the one calling the shots passing, than the one being used as target practice by passing truck busses and cars..
There is nothing worse that a large fast moving missile flying past and blowing you into the next lane ..
I always keep my eyes way up ahead and pick off my targets in my mind as I get to them ..

If you always take the offensive on a bike ... you will stay way more alert and not slip into a dream world quite so easilly ..

Although this idea sound nice ...

I think its a trap to let your head wander off the job at hand ( staying alive )

have a safe trip mate ...
