I replaced the little plastic speedometer nut that goes on the front sprocket and it fixed my speedometer for about 2k miles.  But now it''s not working again.  Is there something I can do so my bike stops eating these little plastic sockets?

If I may hazard a guess:  I wonder if your drive sprocket has ever been replaced?  This is the first post I have seen about the problem you are having.  So I would surmise that maybe the drive sprocket isn''t spaced out far enough and is making too much contact with the speedo gear.

But this is a guess as I have never heard of that problem before.

This is in fact a fairly common problem - there have been quite a few failures from Forum members this year, and there are writeups a few months back, maybe March April. 2K is however way too short - maybe the unit needs lubrication.......?
My bike''s done 70000+K''s now, never a problem, mine just eats cam chains......

I replaced mine three years ago. It is a stupid plastic part. Why plastic? It is stupid.

I will not know what to do if the part bins run out of that part. It is something that would be hard to make. I use to be a machinist and know the difficulties in making a part like that.

The problem is that it is thin walled around the sprocket nut and it breaks. I think that you just need to hope the next one is stronger and the part bins don''t run out.

Guys,

I saw on the internet where an individual had his own web page for his Hurricane and showed how to fix this problem.  I thought I bookmarked it but I cant find it.  When I get back to work tomorrow i will look to see if I bookmarked it on that computer.

Mine has done 112,000 now and only eaten one of those.

Have you ever had your front sprocket replaced?  If so check to see if the head of teh bolt that holds the sprocket on isnt marred or disfigured in any way (by a socket or impact gun) to prevent the plastic gear from fitting over the head of the bolt cleanly.  I had to smooth off the bolt with a flat file on mine in order for it to fit snug after replacing the front sprocket .  Also, be careful putting back on the slave cylinder cover as to not to force it as you could potentially crack the case if your not careful
