So I''m going to look at a 89 CBR600f1 that a local fella is selling.  It has 50k on the odo, but the seller states the motor was rebuilt 10k  ago.  What else should I be looking for?

Also, are the airtech fairings any good?  This one has no lower fairing, so I''m looking at their product. Any suggestions?

yes, airtech fairings are great. you have to drill the mounting holes, but still.

ask for recipts for alll work claimed to be done, otherwise believe its BS.  check for leaky spots anywhere you might find oil or coolant, such as the connections and such.

if the motor was rebuilt, it should have new gaskets. look at the valve cover gasket. it will be a rather thick rubber gasket. press on it (press on the half circle areas) and see if it is hard or soft. a new gasket will be on the soft side and then harden with age. look for any signs of large or goopy amounts of tube sealant in gasket areas. paper gaskets should be sorta new looking if only 10k ago.

start the bike, let it idle, check rpms. if idle is high could be intake leak, carbs not synced, improper idle setting, etc.

rev the bike, listen for any knocking or clicking. could be cam chain is loose. valve train not adjusted, etc.

check the steering stops for any front end damage.

check bar ends and levers for any scratches or bends. could have been down.

look at the bike from the back and see that the subframe or bodywork is centered on the bike.

check for any abnormal tire wear. could be bearings or misalignment.

check chain and sprockets.

check brake fluid, rotors, and pads.

check inside gas tank for any rust.

check for any wet spots, fuel, oil, or coolant.

check clutch action, grabby, does bike shift into gear properly?

check oil level, color, viscosity.

check rim for any bends in the bead lip.

check steering, loose or tight.

check forks for any oil smears around the tube and seals. could be sign that seals need to be changed.

check fork action. too bouncy and fork may need new springs and a rebuild.

test ride and listen for any odd noises. pay attention to handling and shifting.

turn steering lock to lock and see where the bar end is in relation to the gas tank. if both sides end up in different places then bike could have been dropped bending or moving a bar.

good luck.
