just found this place and had to join. i have had 2 hurricanes. i sold my 90 and now i have my 89 as my daily driver.(try that in michigan!) custom paint, yoshy pipe w/ header, lowered, and pilot power 150/60/17 in back and pilot power in frount allso have 520 kit. all that on a bike that has allmost 40,000 miles on it. the bike runs great but lately it has been leaving me stranded. it will run fine then start backfiring and stall out. i replaced oil, filter, plugs, and fuel filter....no difference. checked out things like my manual said and the only thing i could find rong was the black box next to the seat when you take off the fairing, it was in a rubber case and clipped to the subframe. a ohm meter was used and it came back with the rong numbers. i want to change it but the manual calls it a spark unit??? i called the powersports place and they said it was a r/r/ regulator rectafier?? i went to a site like r/r.com and found one but it dosnt look like mine, the honda place said the same thing but i wasnt able to show them the part. i dont think its an r/r because they said it sould be mounted with 2 bolts..this part has no bolts on it. its on the side that dosnt have the fuel shutoff, around the pass. foot peg. can someone tell me what this is called, what it does, and where i can get a new one???? -will check often, thanks for any help!

the part you''re talking about is the CDI.  your regulator is above the motor pretty much in a rather hard to access place.  it sounds to me like your CDI is on its last leg and about to die. time to find a second vehicle so you can still get to/from work while you wait on a CDI for your bike.

i could have sworn there was a guy on these forums that said he had two good CDI units at a good price.  i thought it was a recent post but i cant find anything.  hopefully he will post and help you out.  those things are pricey.

Check the Hurricane part outs, someone may have one.  just make sure the wiring for the bike you''re working on and whatever the part out is is compatible, I believe there was some sort of difference between certain years, but forget what they are right off.

Since you have an ''89, try to get one for ''89 or newer. It is because of the kickstand start thing that is on the ''89 and newer. I have an ''88 and used a CDI from an ''89 and had to do some custom wiring to make it work. I don''t know how you will fare with an ''88 or older CDI. Good luck!
