I have an 03 954, sometimes when I wheelie 2nd gear my bike will pop out of 2nd and go into neutral. And other times it will pop outta 3rd gear back into 2nd mid wheelie, whats goin on???

I don't know, but it sounds scary. If it went from 3rd to 2nd mid wheelie, it would put you on your a$$ wouldn't it?

Well your not gonna like this...
It sounds as if you have a bent shift fork..meaning that the part that engages the gears is worn ( probally and likely on bikes that are wheelied alot) and it is always 2nd gear that seems to be the first gear to be affected since the throw from 1st to 2nd is the longest, and it sounds as if the damage is fairly advanced since it allows it to skip back to 2nd from 3rd..
You have to replace the damaged parts ( usually it is at least three components) and unfortunately I believe you will be looking at a engine teardown to repair it. I dont believe the 954 has a cassette type transmission, which in conventional motorcycle engines the transmission is installed first, followed by the crankshaft and everything else. SO..if that is the case the disassembly is the reverse process; meaning the crankshaft will have to come out to access the tranny....the parts are not too expensive but the labor is the BIG part of this job

Limpy is correct -- sorry $80 in parts $500 in labor.

Need to add that your bike is only going to get worse and it won't take long. Eventually you'll either get it stuck in neutral or the fork will break and crunch some gears. Gears are expensive -- not to mention the safety factor of having the rear lock up if it breaks while pulling a wheelie. Get it fixed.

either that or check your foot position if you put your left foot over the shifter you may be putiing just enough pressure on the lever to push the shifter lever down in to 2nd gear..it happens like when you power shift because you are constanltley adjusting the throttle it would be nice if thats it cause there is no labor involved just foot repostioning...hope thats it

Hope its not a tranny problem. I have 7kmi on the bike and have never adjusted anything such as the clutch cable. Do ya think it could be an adjustment like that? Ive had the clutch slip alittle once or twice also..... I put 13kmi on 2001 R6 almost every mile was a 2nd or 3rd gear wheelie using the clutch and I never had a clutch problem. Im actually surpriced to expeirience a problem like this on a litre class bike with more than enough power to wheelie... I appreciate all your comments and help, Thanks everyone.

I had the same problem. 18,000 miles of wheelies. I opted for the motor swap rather than fixing it. mine got so bad that it wouldn't even engauge in 4th gear and the tranny made bad noise just riding around. the others are right, complete tear down, broken shift fork, broke or worn shifter drum, worn teeth on the gears.
