Hey Guys! I''m brand new to this motorcycle thing and am starting to look around for a bike, but am also looking into the gear needed. My question is what gear do you wear when riding? I see quite a few people riding around with a helmet, jacket, gloves, and blue jeans on. A few months ago I watched a guy fall off his bike going probably 20mph. He had a jacket on with a pair of jeans. When he fell the jeans ripped at the knee and even though he wasn''t going very fast, his leg was pretty bloody. I can only imagine that if he had been going any faster it would have been much worse. I guess I''m wondering why more people don''t wear rider-specific pants that won''t rip when they ride?

Thanks for the response. I went into a local bike shop yesterday and talked to a few guys. The general consensus was that it is so hot in Florida most of the time that it is worth the risk of riding in jeans. I''m still thinking that I''m going to buy a pair a pants that can connect to my jacket. Anyone have suggestions no a good combo?

When i ride its: - HJC CL-SP helmet -Moto GP mesh jacket (looking for a leather one this winter) -Alpinestar riding jeans that are lined with Kevlar for extra protection -ICON merc gauntlet style leather gloves with carbon fiber knuckles -Alpinestar SMX-4 racing boots My theory is always gear up for the crash not the ride. Many people say that it is too hot for alot of gear but i ave ridden in 95+ weather and once your moving and focused on your riding and hitting your spots, and not getting smacked by other cars i dont even notice the heat. quote:

And to the guys at the shop, its a personal decision whether to take that risk, in my eyes i would much rather take a shower to wash off a little sweat, than have a doctor scrubbing my roadrash with a brush to get out all the dirt and rocks. Especially as a new rider i would suggest investing heavily into a good set of gear as you will be more prone to going down in your first months/years on the bike.

I wear full gear - which includes pants & boots. Sure florida gets hotter, but they make hot weather gear for a reason. The truth is jeans are not sturdy enough to be considered crash gear. They''re only a minor step up from kahki shorts. They just rip apart on pavement. So if you crash, jeans suck. Scrapes are bad, but what is worse is when you get stabbed by the gear lever in the side of the leg. Risk is a very personal thing - I''d personally never ride without the gear because I know what it feels like to crash... and I know what it can look like. I''m surprised a bike shop would say you don''t need it - I''m guessing they felt you were more likely to buy a bike, or a helmet, or whatever they had that day if you didn''t think you had to buy pants as well. Pesimistic or realistic - you be the judge. So I have a full set of textile gear for rain/fall riding, and a 1pc leather suit for sporty summer riding. It''s actually cooler than my textiles.

its good to see a post like this, where I live I run into a guys who choose to wear shorts, sandals, and muscle shirts (no helmet of course). Having at least some gear is good but dont take a chance gear up as much as possible. My cousing fell from a friends bike 20mph knee caps blown, elbows, hands back, ass, foot, everything torn. He learned the hard way, n-e ways, invest some money and overall u endup looking way cool with gear matching ur bike!! Fieldsheer mesh jacket and gloves, shoei helmet TZ-R, steel toe ankle boots, and still looking for pants or knee guards.

Helmet (Icon domain decay), Textile Jacket (Alpinestars air-flo), and Alpinestars SMX carbon gloves. That is the minimum I guess, I NEVER wear shorts and always wear a jacket. I''m looking into riding shoes (alpinestars) and riding pants as well. I''m looking to get leather jacket too but with me commuting to work, I can''t wear leather in SoCal it just gets too damn hot BUT Sweat > Blood

^Wow, what a bike! On long trips and whenever I feel the need to, I''''ll wear my: OGK FF4 helmet, Spidi GP Wind Pro suit, Alpinestars GP Tech gloves, Sidi Corsa Vertigo boots. On shorter trips and more practical ones, I''''ll wear everything stated, but instead of the suit, I''''ll have my Spidi Basic Black jacket on.
