CLOSETAT,
Sorry to hear that your having this many problems with your beloved 929. Trouble shooting is a PITA and it can get exspensive and stressful. I have a few questions to ask, who has been performing the work on your bike? Did you show concerns to the mechanic that your not satisfied with the results? I hope they''re not charging you everytime they work on it, are they? From what you describe sounds like a short or a bad ground. Maybe it''s time to take it to a different shop. I''m sure others will chime in soon. Sorry I couldn''t be much help. Best of Luck

I have owned two 2001 929''s. First bike experienced the problems you are describing at about 38k miles. Replaced battey, 6 stators, 3 regulators. Broke down on me in a remote area of Yellowstone park. Had to rig a Harley battery to my bike to get it back to camp. Bike will run fine until all LED gauges go blank. That tells you your bike hasn''t been charging and you are on the last of you battery power. If will soon start running poorly then finally die. I had to swap out the entire main harness to correct problem. Riding second 929 now, after first bike was crashed. It now has 39K miles and it starting to do the same thing. On second battery and second stator. Guess I am going harness shopping. I will be posting new thread looking for answers. Good luck.

How much did that harness cost you? I''m approaching 30k miles...maybe I should sell it around 35k to avoid that problem.

the 929 is a great bike and if you keep it well maintained she will love you back but heres the down side. alternators had always been a problem and if the alternator is gone it could take the r/r and the battery along the way. i''''ve been dealing with this issue since i got her. so the first thing you have to be aware of is why the stator keeps going dead. check for short circuit along the main harness and dont forget to check the little box thats underneath the gas tank, if it is corroded it could lead to all kinds of problems. let me know if you need more info about this joint box on the main harness. i installed a battery meter which basically monitors the battery and charging status, so i will know when the stator is about to died.

I was fortunate and was able to pick up an entire wire harness, including cdi, coils and all sensors for about $35.00. I also purchased a manual, schematic, and auto-ranging volt meter to properly diagnose and repair my bike. The short in the main harness was intermitant and only occured during extended rides.  I commute 55 miles each way to work.  I also installed a volt meter to monitor charging and battery condition.  If the problem occured near work the battery would drain and the bike wouldn''t make it home.  And by the time the meter showed problems the stator was already fried.  I am very interested in fireblade929''s description of harness joint under the tank as being a potential problem.  Can this joint be damaged while lifting tank during repair and tuning?
