Ok, I know the CBR1000RR is noisey but this is REAL noisey, I have an 04 CBR1000RR completely stock except for flapper mod (flapper completely removed). I know the normal "tick" is one thing and thats pretty much what you hear when you rev it in neutral and listen for it, It seems MUCH worse and louder when riding, I can hear it TICK TICK TICK TICK at 80MPH!!!!
It does it when just cruising, accelerating, decelerating etc. If I pull in the clutch the rpm drops of course and the noise goes away, it seems to be more on the left side than the right.
I have had it to Honda and they listened to it and said its normal, but of course noone has ridden it to hear it that way. Is anyone elses this loud? The bike has just turned 10,000 miles, runs fantastic, no idling or running problems whatsoever, fresh Honda hp4 oil. If it is truly normal then I will just turn up the Ipod and not worry and get a powerstroke diesel sticker for the side fairings and be on my way.
I had another 04 and don''t remember it being this loud but I had a full exhaust system and power commander too.

Any help would be great!!! Thanks for reading!

NOOOOOO Don''t do it...lol   dude you''ll be disappointed with that R1. Couple of riderz I know have serious electrical problems with theirs and constantly have problems with the bike. Regarding the noise level, I too have a 04'' 1K RR and recall having noise from the engine but after some checking into..its a normal as you mentioned. If its really really loud then it must be something mechanically wrong...hopefully not the clutch going on you...anyways if its a really a continued problem, sell it and GO FOR THE GUSTO !!!!!!

Dude..runa nd get the 08'' CBR 1k "HONDA RULES MACHINE"

Hey..good luck

The bike runs great, its just really loud, I can hear the ticking or tapping over the wind noise at 80 mph, The bike has never been messed with, or even run really hard, when I pulled the intake out to remove the flapper I also checked and tightened all exhaust header bolts just to make sure, I also removed the stator to see if it was rubbing somehow, after I got the bike back together the noise seemed not as bad for a while, now its just as noisey as before I started, one thing that makes it different from alot of other post is mine is quite when its cold, it only starts making this noise after I have been riding for 20 or 30 minutes. The oil is fresh with genuine Honda filter and 10w40 Honda HP4 oil, oil level is good etc. The noise seems to be toward the front and left side. I''m gonna have a friend ride it that has owned Hondas forever and see what he thinks. I was going to pull it apart and check the valves but it says do it when its cold and my thinking is the valves would be in specs since its qiute when its cold.

Try and post your concerns on the General Tech section to see what others may be able to help with ?

Maybe you have a slight exhaust leak somewhere.

I recall when i sold my 04 1k.. with mind you 19,000 miles didnt need any valve adjustments or any issues with the exception on it used to burn oil. From time to time it when I used to revv it in top end gears it would smoke. Once when I looked at the oil window, I saw the oil was gone. Checked with other resources and they said this model tends to burn oil??? anyways I finally got rid of the bike..athough I must say the bike ran extemely well besides the tick noise stuff.....

Mine only ticks from like 2k until around 4k rpm, so I''''m rarely in the RPM range to hear it.  It just sounds like a light tapping which is the "normal" sound, its a little annoying but not that bad.  If it is more persistant and across a broader rev range I would look into exhaust leaks, cam chain tensioner, valves, etc...

I had an 04 that used to smoke when you revved it. turned out some 04 models had an issue with sucking the oil up through crank case vent. So it did burn oil, but by blowby on the pistons, just sucking it through the throttle bodies.

With my ''07 there are 4 different noises I''ve noticed-
1. Cam chain tensioner makes a slapping sound when cold (my ''87 Hurricane had similar issues)
2. Valve train tapping, most noticeable during for the first 30 seconds of warm-up.
3. Primary fuel injector noise. Sounds exactly like spark knock, but it isn''t. I''ve taken insane measures to figure out what the source of this noise was.
4. Drive chain noise, the stock chain makes a constant metallic rattle unless it''s gooped up with lube.

Is it good to switch to a heavier oil instead of the 10w40 i use now, maybe going with a 20w50 ?

I have driven the bike almost 2000 miles so far with the noise, and everything from easy cruising to all out redline screaming, the noise has not gotten any worse or better, can''t hear it at all with the ipod going!!!!!
I guess it really is normal!

My guess is cam chain tensioner bad, loose, doesnt self adjust, etc... My f4i sounded like that and had to have a new tensioner put in. Assuming 1000rr uses something similar?! But dunno, no mechanic
