Hey all,

I am new to this bike really, no intimate knowledge other then what I have read here. I bought it naked and was handed all the broken plastic. I got it temporarily put back together for the summer and rode it. I''ve done the basic fluid changes with a new to me bike. I want to tear it down during our Michigan winter to do a more thorough inspection of the frame and other parts.

My question is to the seasoned F owners of where I should be looking, what to look for, and while it''s torn down what I should look at to replace.

It''s a 94, had 10,000 miles on it when I got it, 13,000 miles now. It seems to run real well, stop good and seem generally in good shape. When I said I was handed the broken plastic I think everything but the tail section was affected. I just want to make sure everything is safe and I''m not looking at major failure later or while I''m on it.

I spose it really depends on how far you intend to strip her mate.???..

13,000 mile is not much for these rides...so I would not be inclined to rip the engine apart just yet unless she is making any serious weird noises ??? ..

Brakes should be fine ( check pads for wear , lines for any small signs of leaks ect )

Nothing on the frame ( visual crash damage inspection )

Wheels ( check the bearings for damage or excessive movement - replace if necessary )

Steering ( check for movement in the head stem bearings - replace if allot of movement is found )

Wiring ( tidy and clipped up properly - make sure she has no black burnt looking spots anywhere from shorts )

Fuel lines and hoses ( check for cracking or aging - replace if found )

In reality 13,000 is so little for these that I think that nothing but obvious damage would need too much attention mate...

Thanks for the response.

I won''t be tearing down the motor, nor will I be removing it.

I was just curious if there were any spots on the frame that might be weak or prone to damage from crashes. Looks like it hit both sides or had more than one crash.

I feel the head bearings move a little and make a click noise on hard stops. I was planning on replacing those and having the fork seals and oil changed.

I didn''t think about the wheel bearings till you mentioned it. What about the swing arm?

Got to get some matching rubber, new chain and sprockets, carb sync, and a good needed cleaning. I don''t hear any noise coming from it from anywhere when it''s running. Figured I would just do a once over on it with a torque wrench for safety.

I''m not a speed freek or wheely guy, i just want a reliable bike like it has been so far.

Yer , not tearing the engine down is a good decision mate ..

The swing arm also at those miles should be fine... just rip the wheel out and put her up on stands or the center stand if you have one ? and like a good chick ...give her a sideways wiggle

to check for movement...

The head stem may just need lube , but yer replacing them if they do the click click thing ..is probably the right idea ..

The frames are pretty strong ..
but yer just clean it up and " look over all the welds and joins for any sign of paint cracking " ....that''''s a good way to see if its been super strained by crashing mate ..

you have fun .... I would! ...

I like stripping rides down to give them a super tidy up
