Oil Change Information

mini bagels -> Oil Change Information (3/10/2006 6:02:31 PM)

Hey guys, Im changing my oil at the moment, and i got a quick question. In my service manual it says i need a special torque wrench to tighten the oil filter to 7ft.lbs. Am i going to need one of these? Or can I just tighten it by ear? If I can't, i'll just bring it to the dealer for the filter change. Thanks guys

I have always hand tightened it real good. Just make sure to put some oil in the filter and around the rubber ring before you screw it on. Been changing my own oil and filter for a couple of years and have never had any problems.

Just spin the filter on until the gasket makes contact with the engine, and give it about 1/2 a turn. DONE|

Ditto. No need for any special wrench. Hand tight is all you need.

ok, here's aother squid question for oil changes. I bought my bike used and don't have a manual to look it up, so what kind of oil (I know bike, but is there a type like 10w-whatever?) and how much do y'all use?

I use golden spectro 20w 50 synthetic oil. I buy the 4 quart jug and put about 3.5 quarts in. Bike rides good and shifts smoothly.

my 98 f3 took in 5 quarts, is that normal?

cbr_newbie -> RE: Oil Change Information (3/12/2006 11:29:34 AM)

um.. i think u over filled it lol

Downforce137 -> RE: Oil Change Information (3/12/2006 1:03:32 PM)

Yah, dont check the oil with the bike on the sidestand, that's prolly the problem.. You have to have the bike upright, so have someone hold it, or sit on it and check it, also don't screw the dipstick back in, just set it in there and pull it back out and check the stick. Oil capacity with oil and filter change is 3.9 US quarts I believe.. And it really should only be overfilled if you are doing 2 mile wheelies, or 1000 foot endos. :)

dragonmaster_91 -> RE: Oil Change Information (3/12/2006 5:13:14 PM)

I use Amsoil. I'm an independent dealer for AMS. Its the best oil I have ever used. I became a dealer for AMS because I wanted to buy AMS products at wholesale prices. Check it out for yourself but I will never switch. I only have to change my oil once a year or if I wanted too I could change it every 25,000 miles.

denhou1974 -> RE: Oil Change Information (3/12/2006 11:01:25 PM)

From the F3 service manual ...

Engine Oil Capacity
w/o filter change: 3.6 qt
w filter change: 3.9 qt

Recommended engine oil
SF or SG SAE 10W-40

I like MOTUL 5100T synthetic blend - about $25 a gallon. I also use the Mobil-1 M110 oil filter - about $10. It's an inch longer than the stock filter which means more filter area. It's kind of a tight fit with stock headers though. The Mobil-1 M108 is the same length as the stock filter (2.5in) and fits easier.
NEVER use a xxW-30 weight oil in your bike. They usually contain friction modifiers.

The track bike gets Wal-Mart 10W-40 and a FRAM oil filter, but I change the oil after each track day.

I like to use Repsol conventional blend for break ins.At the second change about 3k I use the repsol 10w-50 race all year round. I swear by it good stuff![sm=groupwave.gif]
