I've got 9100 on my 2001. No smoke, no problems, no oil consumtion. I've heard if these engines are taken care of, especially with synthetic oils, they last a long time, way longer than 20k. It all depends on how the bike was taken care of, if it was raced or abused in other ways. When I go to look at a bike or a car, I always ask the owner not to start the engine on the day I'm coming over to look at it. I want to start it absolutely cold. Then when I start it, I check for any smoke from the exhaust (anything other than a wisp of white condensation or steam - there should be no black or blue smoke) and that gives you a decent idea of the condition of the piston rings. You'll also be listening for knocking or tapping coming from the engine at startup, noise which may or may not subside as the engine warms up. Any doubts, walk away. Lots of bikes out there. $5600 is not bad, but not cheap either for a 20k bike - like you say, if it's in great shape otherwise, it might not be a bad deal. There are a TON of variables.
