im looking to buy a 2001 929.... i got the guy down to 5600 before even going to look at it. Supposing the bike is in great operating and cosmetic condition, should i be worried about the fact that it has 20,000 miles on it? How many miles do you guys have on your 929's and how many miles is alot?

I've got 9100 on my 2001. No smoke, no problems, no oil consumtion.

I've heard if these engines are taken care of, especially with synthetic oils, they last a long time, way longer than 20k.

It all depends on how the bike was taken care of, if it was raced or abused in other ways. When I go to look at a bike or a car, I always ask the owner not to start the engine on the day I'm coming over to look at it. I want to start it absolutely cold. Then when I start it, I check for any smoke from the exhaust (anything other than a wisp of white condensation or steam - there should be no black or blue smoke) and that gives you a decent idea of the condition of the piston rings. You'll also be listening for knocking or tapping coming from the engine at startup, noise which may or may not subside as the engine warms up.

Any doubts, walk away. Lots of bikes out there. $5600 is not bad, but not cheap either for a 20k bike - like you say, if it's in great shape otherwise, it might not be a bad deal. There are a TON of variables.

ALSO ALSO ALSO !!!!!

Don't touch the headers to test if the bike was running before you got there - the titanium headers cool off VERY quickly, and will likely feel cold anyway even if the bike was running as recently as 10 or 15 minutes ago.

CAREFULLY feel the engine itself or the radiator/hoses, etc to see if it is still warm, and that'll tell you if he followed your request not to run it prior to your arrival.

i have 22000 on mine and it ran great till i wrecked it but then again i only paid 4500 for mine and from what i was told it was a steal. from other people i ride with 30000 miles is like 100000 miles on a car so like other people are saying check for smoke and knocking.

my first 929 (im on my 3rd) has 35,000+ miles on it. i crashed it and my friend uses it as a stunt bike and everything runs fine. by the way, i think that $5600 might be a little high for a 20k mile 5 year old bike. i bought my current 929 a year ago with only 7000 miles on it and gave $5000. and that was from a dealer

If the guy took care of it then mileage isnt a huge deal but check the blue book value, check the bike from end to end, then talk price. I have 4233 miles on my 01 929rr

Right on, dragonmaster. Basically it's a case of "Take your time and use your head".

No reason these engines can't keep rockin' if they are taken care of.

I bought mine 2 years ago with 13k miles on it for $5500. It now has close to 18K miles and still runs excellent. Honda makes extremely reliable bikes.

$5600 might be a little bit high for those miles.

Mine's got 31,000 (yeah, I know!) but it runs great. No smoke, no leaks, nothing. I do tke care of it religiously, though. I can't wait, it's got it 32,000 mile maintenance check coming up and with an extended warranty, I've got no worries.
