Stock is 43, or 42 Depending on where the bike was manufactured. Canada and UK might be the 42? an extra 3 teeth might be stretching your chain pretty close on the adjusters. It all depends on how many links are in your current chain. I would suggest just dropping a tooth on the front. One down in the front is = to 3 in the back. If you've already done that, then the extra 3 teeth might just fit as you would have only 2 teeth difference after the one in the front.

After seeing much debate about this topic on this and other forums, I get the impression that Honda issued a few different configurations in the two years the 929 was produced. Apparently stock was either 16 front 42 rear or 15 front and 42 rear. I have also heard some guys claim 43 rear. The chains were 530, 108 links.

stock gearing is 16T front and 43T rear on a 530 chain with 108 links. a 46T sprocket meant for a 525 chain will not work. even if it was for a 530 chain, the stock chain would probably be too short to work. your best bet is to order a 520 conversion kit with the sprockets and proper length chain. edit: the non-u.s. models had a 42T rear sprocket.

thanks guys, is the 520 chain any weaker? will it wear faster? i dont race my bike or anything other than 1/8 mile dragstrip every now and then, and i need a new chain anyways so would the 520 conversion be the best thing to do? do aluminum sprockets wear out faster?

IMO, you have more to lose ($$$) than gain by switching to a 520

Here is a link to Vortex. They have sprockets for the 929 from 39 thru 75 teeth. 45 and 46 are popular sizes they keep in stock. Vortex Sprockets

ORIGINAL: stanghater so i went and counted mine, i have 46. What does this mean? how can i tell what chain it is? My speedo is waayyy off It means whoever had it before you changed the rear sprocket. Unless he installed a speedohealer or other speedometer correcting device, your speedometer is off about 7% (reading too high). Check your front gear, you may have a 15T up front as well. If you have a 15T front with the 46 rear, then your speedometer would be off about 14%. As far as the chain is concerned, a 520 is thinner and lighter than the stock 530. If you compare it to a stock bike and yours is thinner, then its most likely a 520.

SprocketSpecialists.com offers a split rear sprocket that doesn't require removing the rear wheel, but you gotta remove it anyway in your case to get the old one off! So it's your call - and SprocketSpecialists ain't the cheapest around.
