Hello everyone, I just bought a used 2002 CBR600 F4i last week and have only ridden it 3 times (twice besides the first test ride). I am very mechanically inclined and work on automobiles constantly but have not been able to figure this out. Tomorrow I am going to check the throttle cable and the throttle adjustment but wanted to see if anyone might know what is wrong.

Yesterday when I went to start my bike to go on a ride I started it and it immeidaltey went to 3000RPM and stayed there. I checked the trottle and turned the grip backwards to make sure it wasnt catching or something and it was all the way shut. I blipped it and the reves went up but came back down to 3000RPM. Basically it just stays at 3000RPM and will not go lower. The previous 3 times I started it it idled perfectly (these were 3 separate days).

Any ideas or has anyone experienced this?

Update, I messed with the idle adjustment and it didn't do anything. I turned it as far as I could in both directions. (mayube this adjustment knob is screwed up) b/c it sure was hard to turn. I couldnt tell if it was turning anything, but the knob was turning. How easy should this be to turn and any other ideas from anyone? This is freaking me out. Also, I didn't know if this was a good idea, but decided to shift it into first at the 3000RPM it was idling at. It immediately died (still had the clutch in) as soon as I shifted to first from nuetral. I put it back in nuetral and started it and it was still at 3000RPMS. I don't understand that.

It almost sounds like an air leak...on carburated model if there is an air leak ( usually on the manifolds that hold the carbs, they can get cracks or the carbs are not completely seated) it will have symptoms like that. Has the fuel injection bank been removed recently or has the bike been crashed?? if either of this has happened, try inspecting the manifolds that hold the throttle bodies in place

The bike was crashed (not bad) about 8 months ago. It only had the right side fairing and upper fairing cracked slightly and rashed. I will check all that tomorrow. I am assuming I need to remove the airbox and gas tank correct? If anyone else has ideas, please chime in, the more the better.

Yes the tank and airbox will need to removed to inspect this

When you shifted into first the sidestand was prolly down -- that's why it died. But I wouldn't recommend riding until you get the idle situation settled. Sounds like Limpy has you on the right track with a possible air leak or loose hose.

Now this is probably not the cause and is rare but it did happen to me once so I suppose it could happen to someone else. I picked up a piece of road debris (the size of a BB) and it lodged perfectly behind my throttle cable pulley. Didn't ntice until I exited the interstate and couldn't do less that 10000 rpms. By the time I got off the ramp and pulled over safely my brakes were glowing red. So if it was running fine when ya parked it I suppose some garbage could've lodged your pulley open.

I think I fixed it. I took off the Left fairing and watched the idle screw while I turned the adjustment knob. it was binding up and not turning it. A little adjustment of the knob and line and placing it back in the plastic holder seemed to fix it. I adjusted it down some and now it is fine. I think it was just a little high and goes to about 2000-2500 for 2-3 minutes until it warns up a little, then goes to 1300, dead on.

I love my new bike, this thing is awesome, no complaints now. Thanks for the help guys.
