Has anyone here done a 520 conversion on their bike? I'm hearing lots of good stuff about it but I would like some first hand knowledge.

No, don't do it. Those who make claims for it, I'll dare say, are full of crap. If they did the common change of a drop of one tooth at the front it's that change they felt and not the chain.

The change of the chain is to reduce rotating mass and I defy them to feel the difference at street speeds and riding conditions even if they're riding hard and way over the speed limit. The effect goes up with speed but even at the track where the speeds may be 150+ the difference is not that great and most riders short of expert wouldn't detect the small difference even then.

The reduced weight is accomplished by narrowing the chain and sprocket width, making the pins and rollers shorter, therefore slightly less weight. If I remember correctly, the pitch is still 5/8" and pin diameters are the same, therefore the chain's strength is as good, or even slightly higher due to the reduced pin span. Where the problem comes in is the sprocket teeth wear, especially the front. The reduced width affords less area to carry the load and it's the sprocket teeth that becomes the "weak link". While the chain's doing fine, the sprocket's getting shredded. Expect a life of about 5,000 miles out of a front, less if you're riding it real hard. You'll clean all of the teeth off it and not know it's coming because the sprocket's buried under the cover and you won't see it.

Racers will tolerate that because they're lucky if they do 100 miles in a day's racing. A typical track day is only about 120 miles. You could run a track bike a whole season and still only get a thousand or two thousand miles on it. Save the trick stuff for that, especially when even then, the gain is small. Hope that helps.

Thanks Dad, I would have been very disappointed and upset if I had made the change only to be back in my present situation after only 5-6000 miles!
