I just went out for my second ride on my new to me 92 CBR900RR wth my bro who has a 89 GSXR1100 powered Katana (wet weight 470lbs) that also has a big bore kit(1189) , K&N, full yosh system. In 5th and 6th at about 70 mph he just barely pulls away, but off the line in the first three gears I beat him. I knew the 900 was a marvel in it's day, but I didn't think it would compare to my brother's bike. In 89 the GSXR 1100 weighed 550lbs!!! and did the 1/4 only 1 tenth slower than a cbr900, so I thought with the lightness my brothers bike would kill me. Guess not. For anyone who thinks these bikes are dated, think again.

I have had my 900rr for a few months now and when i first got it(its a 94), i moded it heavily, but only spent under 1000 for everything which was a steal considering i got the bike itself for 2500 and it has 18k miles on it. I stuck Keihin 39 mm's on it, full D&D exhaust with CF pipe, 1 down in the front 2 up in the rear to make it 15/45, K&N air filter, new chain, new tires. I polished the frame and swingarm which look nice. little stuff etc.

It still however looks like a street fighter considering ive had the entire front plastics off for 4 months cuzz the dood who is painted them is in new orleans. now and the only thing in the front is a crash cage, I sold all my 94 plastics and upgraded to 98 plastics for only around $50 so atleast i have the 98 rear end and tank on it. im serious 50$, it cost so low because by the time i sold all my plastics for my 94 on ebay, i turned around and bought the plastics for the 98 and after the exchange i ended up only $50 over.

anyways, in performance the only word i can use to describe it is beutiful. my brother owns a 00 929, and i can keep up with him. considering his bike is 6 years newer than mine and is worth alot more dough, im more than happy with the fact that i bought this bike as a 'first ride', and didnt break the bank.

oh ya one more thing that made me really happy was, i did all the work myself from top to bottom. So i had the ability to learn off this experience and become educated enough to teach others.

Stay safe, have fun

I GOT THE MOSTLY THE SAME MODS (EXCEPT CARBS) AS MEMBER - 94cbr900. THE RIDERS ON THE NEW RIDE ALWAYS UNDERESTIMATE US. HAHA, WHEN THEY CHASE ARE TAILLIGHT THE JOKE IS ON THEM.

i have a quick question. i have a 1995 900RR with a micron full exhaust, one down in fron and two teeth up in the rear sprocket, and i want to ask you i topped it out the other night and it showed 175 and it would not do more. Now the thing that worries me is - is it normal for me to get killed after 150 by a 2001 GSX-R750 ? before that i pull on him but after 150 he passes me. i know that the 2001 gsx-r750 can get 128rwhp and its lighter. i guess the sprockets have their affect on top speed. And one more thing, doest the K&N Air Filter really help?? i mean is it noticable?

p.s. i know that i probably was not going faster than 160mph actual speed...

Yes it is absolutely normal for you to get raped by a FI gixxer 750 after 150. You altered your sprockets thur further exasperating the outcome.

You have to remember the 00-01 750s BEAT the 929, R1 and ZX-9R on TOP END!

So of COURSE it would walk away from a 900rr, no offense.

I used to have a GSX-R 750 89 with an 1100 motor 5 speed (actually an 87 motor so it was 1052 cc). 4 K&N pods, jetted, Yosh pipe, -1 front and I think +2 or +3 in the rear.

I used to run EVERYONE ALL THE DAMN TIME just to see where the 1100 stood.

60 mph to 160 mph run against a 9R 2000 model I would sloooooooooooooowly walk away.

Running against a 1st gen R1...he would slooooooooooowly walk away the way I would on the 9R. He would consistently run 10.9 @ the strip to my 11.0! I couldn't keep the front wheel down on tha thing!

I ran an 00-02 750, not sure of the mods on the hwy and we were LOCKED DEAD EVEN for a while.....had it gone into psycho mode over 160 I'm SURE he would have walked away from me.

Once I geared -1 +3, even my buddy on a telefonica would be able to stick w/me drafting when we were topped out all the way. I would pull him HARD on the hwy but wouldn't get too far as I topped out...

I rode a 929 once back to back from my 1100....instantly felt like a weaker bike given the lower displacement....but I'm sure it could hold its own w/the 1100 on a long straight if modded similarly.

I should mention I weigh about 130 lbs ;-)

A.

My bro just got his bike dynoed, and he got 129.9hp at the rear wheel. Apparently all dynos automatically adjsut the horsepower numbers for sea level and temp, so you can compare this to other dynos (of course there is some error from dyno to dyno). My bike make about 115 at the rear wheel (according to magazines). Early 900's aren't exactly the most aerodynamic bikes, and since top end relies only on horsepower (weight has nothing to do with top speed, just how long it takes to get there) it is not surprising the 900 is slower at higher speeds. This winter I'll do some mods and then next summer, we'll see....

If I keep mine running for a whole day and can actually ride it more then 30miles I'll give my input on the bike. Till then, safe riding and safe hiding
