I finally got my bike started, and it did *(whew), but when I take the choke off it dies. I'v tried turning the adjust knob but the rpm's never move. Any ideas? Should I adjust the throttle cables or the choke or both.

Thx

i was having that same problem, unfortunately for you and me i still am. although i believe my starter is out now. i think it has something to do with the carbs. maybe the idle or main jet. maybe the throttle valves are stuck open too. the throttle valves would be easy to check, just take off the gas tank, air filter, filter casing and you can see the jet needles. just push them up with a screwdriver and check those. as far as the idle jets, i could not get to mine, you can remove the float bowl to get to them, but some dumbass bonded the bowls to the carbs so i cant remove them. i would first try some fuel additive, highly recommended to me was Lucas, it is a clear bottle with a green cap, and is probable 8-12oz, i dont remember. but that was recommended over sea foam, very thick liquid.

Thx, Im not confident enough to take that beast apart. Iv cleaned all the air housing and so forth, speaking of which, in my dirt bike(xr 280r big bore) I put a thin layer of grease in the box itself to catch any dirt, do peaple do this on street bikes? I'll try to check the jet like you said, thx again.

I apologize in advance for my lack of mechancal knowledge, the needle jet is in those cylindercal structurs? While I was adjusting the choke cable, I noticed alot o crude built up in there, could that be the cause of the idle adjusting knob not to be changing the rpm's?( hoping its the right one, as the manuel says it dies) man, I looked at where it connects, you have to take the whole carb assembly off, way beyond my skill.lol.

I would just take it in, if you dont think your able to do it yourself, let a pro get it done the first time and get it done right. Or ask a friend who knows a thing or two to help you out.

yeah, the jet needle is that silver needle that comes out of the bottom of the cylindrical thingy. where the needle goes is the idle jet and eventually main jet. where that needle goes is the float bowl and if you take that off, thats where all the jets are.

******EDIT:sorry i was looking at it upside down. okay here is the picture with correct labels:

1. FLOAT BOWLS: THEY ARE ON THE SIDE THE CARBS ARE SITTING ON.
2. CHOKE ADJUSTMENTS
3. THROTTLE CABLE ADJUSTMENTS
4. IDLE ADJSTMENTS

Ras, there actually is air madjustment screws on the carbs as well. Not sure if the teck name for them as I don't have the manual in front of me. But thier little screws with a spring, I know on my dirt bike its like 3 1/2 turns out but not so sure for street rods.
