Hello.

I got a 1994 CBR 600 for free yesterday. It's a long story, but it's not stolen or anything like that. The bike has been wrecked pretty bad, bent handle bars, all the plastic is scraped and broken. The bike is showing 13,539 miles on the odometer.

It's been sitting for a couple of years. The keys were lost some time a go so I had to hotwire it. I then put a battery charger on it for a couple of hours. Hit the starter button and it started right up. It missfired some and was puffing whiteish grey smoke out the exaust and was a little slow to rev up at first. After about a minute it started to rev up and run ok. I let the bike idle for a few seconds and it quit running. Now it won't start back up. It sort of tries to but it just won't kick off.

Does anyone know anything about the wireing on these bikes? The ignition key switch has 3 wires going to it. I connected the two red wires together and it started once. There is also a blue wire with an orange stripe going to the switch, does anyone know what that wire does? None of the lights, horn, or anything seem to function.

The bike has about a quarter tank of gas which I put in it yesterday. I have tried the choke in various positions with no change. I have not checked for spark yet, but will this afternoon. There is a vaccum line hanging loose that goes to the left most intake just in front of the carb. Does anyone know where that is supposed to go?

I'd start by dumping all of the gas out of the tank and draining the carbs. Refill with fresh fuel. If the bike has been sitting for a few years, the fuel may be starting to varnish.

Then I'd replace the spark plugs, clean/replace the air filter, make sure the battery has an adequate charge, etc. Go after the obvious stuff first.

I can't say for sure but see if that hose is supposed to be attached to the bottom of the gas tank. Good luck.

that hose is the vacume for the petcock.works as your fuel pump.after two years you need to pull those carbs of and clean them.also change the plugs.those two things and she should fire right up

The bike didn't have any old gas in it. My buddy says he ran fuel stabilizer through it and then drained it dry before storeing it in a shed a couple of years ago. I put fresh gas in yesterday.

After reading you guys posts, I've got a gut feeling it may not be getting enough gas from the tank since that line is hanging loose. I will hook that back up and put some new plugs in. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Well, put new plugs in it and it fired right up! 42 bucks for 4 spark plugs! These things ain't cheap!

It's still puffing smoke and has a knock at low RPM's. Hopefully it turns out to be something simple but I'm not holding my breath. Man it runs like a bad outa hell though!

Sounds like you need a new CCT.

I'm sorry...a CCT is a Cam Chain Tensioner. It's a fairly common problem with these bikes for the CCT to go bad. I just replaced mine with 26,000 miles. There are threads on here showing how to replace the CCT...very easy.
