Hello, I am new to the forum my name is matt btw.
Anyways I searched around for a bit and couldn't find really any information so thought I would ask.
My buddy has a 2003 Honda CBR 600RR and we were considering turboing it for a little project. I have turboed cars before, and have all the equiptment and supplies to fabricate everything mechanical for the bike e.g. exhaust/turbo manifold, downpipe, exhaust, charge pipes, intake, oil lines, etc. My main question was wondering what may need to be done fuel wise to ensure the mixture doesn't run lean. I haven't checked out how the fuel is currently setup if there is a return line or not, or if I could get away with a rising rate fuel pressure regulator, or if I am going to need somekind of electronic piggy back fuel system to make it work. Also was curious if anyone knows what the stock compression is and if it needs to be decreased or not, and if I can do that with a head gasket or if someone offers one, or if I am going to have to get a decompression plate custome made, etc. Anyways any help is greatly appreatiated thanks!

Are you going to be using this bike for street use? If you are i wouldnt put a turbo on it, I have seen quite a few guys that have flipped the bike all the way over because the turbo kicked in when they were raising a wheelie.

I think the 600RR has enough power, street and with a little modifications it does very well on the track.

Dude I would definitely go for it!
Sounds like a great project.
I wouldn't worry about flipping it, if you have the knowledge to do this project yourself then you have gained the understanding of what it can do.
Oh, as far as any of your questions go, yeah, I have no idea... you are way above of me.

as far as motor work goes I think you can get by on the stocker but I wouldn't run more than 4-5lbs of boost on it... stock compression is 12.0:1, since you've turbo'd cars before I'm sure you used to running about 9-10:1. You will need to get a power commander to get it to run right because with any sort of boost will be running way to much air into it to keep the mixture rich. Even with the DSFI... a power commander is basically a piggy back unit that maps fuel. You could step up all the way to a motul but I don't think it would be worth your time. The engine internals are pretty strong so a spacer plate might be the way to go, as i doubt anyone makes a head gasket... most the the aftermarket gaskets are thinner to raise compression to around 12.5-13:1... If I were you I'd just get a different set of pistons and rods/ crank to lower the compression. if you're going to go all out on this thing you might as well do it right.

Here's a list of what I think you'd need.
Forged pistons
Forged Rods
Forged / Balanced crank
Adjustable cam gears
PC-III USB (dyno jet power commander)
obviously custom intake/ exhaust system

Awsome thanks for the replies!
Yeah its his street bike but he isn't big in popping wheelies and stuff just going fast. He wants to get the 1000cc because he wants more power and we thought it would be funner to get his bike more power without having to swap bikes, etc.

Ok so the power commander seems like that could work for fuel tuning...5psi would work...just a couple more questions: Will I have to upgrade the fuel components at all to get it to flow enough fuel equivelent to 5psi or will I have to up the injectors, fuel pump, etc. then re-tune it? Also what size of turboes do people generally slap on a sports bike now adays? I have a spare turbo sitting in my garage its an IHI off an old subaru wagon, its really small and I don't even think it would be able to spool past like 8psi anyways, would something small like that work perfect for this bike? I may even just buy a new one not sure...the thing thats confusing me a little is the fact that the bike revs so high...

Does anyone know what kind of air reading sensor is used (e.g. MAF or MAP)? Will that one be sufficient with the extra air going into the engine? So I can get the piggyback and put in some maps along with the air?

Aftermarket stand alone systems for cars will use the stock map. They tell you to go w/ a higher bar if you run higher boost pressures but the stock map "should" be good for 8-10 lbs w/out pushing alot of cfm. Stock maps in the Honda cars handle around 15lbs depending on cfm. Good luck be safe.

the maps in these bikes are a lot more specific than the ones in cars... the engine tolerances are a lot tighter so there is less room for error in the fuel mapping. ESP with such a high compression ratio and high RPM you can't really run rich or the engine will just grenade...

The stock fuel system should be able to keep up, I'm pretty sure it's a MAF sensor but I could be wrong so don't quote me on it... The PC-III should allow you to richen up the mixture enough without upgrading the fuel pump or the injectors... all 8 of them... Personally I don't know how much 5psi is going to give you... might not really make it worth your while unless you are really trying to squeeze away without doing any motor mods... A top end rebuild might be in order anyway since you're going to have to tear apart most of the bike to put in the turbo. People generally use small turbos unless it's something like a busa with a lot of displacement... but I can't name any specifics... I've seen a couple laying around the SAE formula shop but never bothered to note the make/ model
