you need to see what sizes are available from whoever you plan on getting tires from.

you know that you are running a 17 inch rim, so we can forget about that number. and you know you want to run a 150, so we can forget about that one as well.

now we come to the middle number which is the height of the sidewall. 90 is pretty tall. but is not made in conjunction with a 150.

so you need to look at what manufacturers are making in a 150. for instance. dunlop makes a gt501 150/70/17 rear and 110/80/17 front. but you can see that the front is slighty "taller" than the rear. this means to get the correct height back on the bike you would need to lower the front a couple millimeters. because a higher front causes lazy steering. while a higher back causes quicker steering.

if we look on the list again, we see that dunlop makes a gt501 140/80/17 rear and a 110/80/17 front. these together will balance out.

if you look at newer bikes the rear has a lower sidewall height than the front, but this descrepancy is made up in the suspension height built into the motorcycle. on the f1 it is not. both ends need to be the same or close and height difference can be made by suspension height adjustment.

back to the 140. it is not what you want but you can use a 150 because the tire will fit, but you will have to make a slight adjustment on the front to keep the bike in balance. this is one reason why getting good tires for the f1 is so hard because both the front and rear need to match up as far as sidewall height goes. if you run a 120 front it isn't so bad because all the tires are lower profile but the 120 doesn't really fit on the narrow f1 rim.

When I bought my bike it had a 160 on the rear on OEM rim. I hated riding around on it, the clearance was way to close for my comfort. I am now running 140/80 on the rear and it is working just fine. You want to stay somewhat close to stock sizes, they are determined to get you the best performance out of the bike.

thanks guys, i understood the 150 and the 17, just didnt know what the 90 was...but i got it now. thanks again guys.

I just bought a 89' and i'm not sure of the complete dimensions , but i am pretty sure the rear tire is a 160 and it doesn't rub or anything.

There is no such thing as chassis dynamics for a bias ply tire or a radial tire. Some people just post replies on this site having no ideas what they are talking about. They just want you to think they know it all, and you should do the same as them.

Bias and radial tires have significantly different dynamic properties. They deflect differently, create different cornering forces, have different damping characteristics, as well as other differences. In order for radial tires to be introduced into the two-wheel market, it was necessary to change certain characteristics of the motorcycle. The introduction of the radial tire led to such things as modified frames, new steering geometries and suspensions. Therefore, it is recommended that a motorcycle be used with the type of tire construction that it came with originally. If a change is to be made, then it should only be done if the motorcycle or tire manufacturer has approved the change. Above all, do not mix bias ply and radial tires on the same motorcycle unless it is with the approval of the motorcycle or tire manufacturer.

I just ordered a set of Pirelli Sport Demons 110/70/17 and 150/7017 they are bias ply and only cost me $200 installed. I keep you posted on their proformance after a few miles

i just put a pair of sport demons on my cane too, have not ridden since then, hopefully this week i get to take the ol girl out. i stuck with the stock 130, but had to drop to the 70 profile as well.

Well I am going to look at some tires for my bike tomorrow. I just looked and low and behold ... no wonder my bike is squirly. I just thought it was the cupped bald tire on the front and the back tire has a flat worn down the center.

Look at what the knot head before me had on it.

Front
Michelin Radial
Macadam 90X
120/70ZR/17

Rear
Michelin Radial
Macadam 90X
150/70ZR/17

Now whos the idiot ... Him for having these tires on it or me doing 120 on it the 3rd day I had it?

Micro, are you freaking kidding me?!?!?! 150 ON THE FRONT!?

Finally got to test out my Sport Demons, they are AWESOME! Very responsive and they dive right into the corners. I put 150 miles on them this weekend. I would also highly recommend them.

HAHA ...

No I ment 120 front and 150 in the rear. My bad!

I put on some Dunlop GT501's on Saturday.

Front 110-80-17
Rear 140-80-17

I put 350 miles on them this weekend. "Desert to the Moutains". I had a GREAT ride I was fat out in the Mojave Desert and I was twistin it like mad in the moutains in Big Bear! GOOD TIRES

put me on the list of dumb previous owners
mine came with a 160 on the rear, that combined with blown out forks makes it very hard to get the thing to cut into a corner.
this bike also has a "custom" tail, and is missing the rear fender and tire hugger. if i put a new hugger on before i put a new tire on, will the hugger even fit?

just a note on the "middle" number on tire sidewalls, its representing the sidewall height as a percentage of the tread width, so a 110/70/17 wont have the same sidewall height as a 150/70/17, but it will keep the proportions closer to correct if you match the middle number if thats the way it was from teh factory. This is also the reason the middle number decreases as the width of the tire increases, other wise your over all diameter would be much larger.

Hi, I am the new owner of a 90 600F. I found a service manual that says that the bike came from the dealer with 120/60/17 in the front and 160/60/17 in the rear. Is this just wrong, or is it just that everyone prefers the smaller size tires for various reasons?

If you downloaded that manual, it is not even for the F1...and yes those dimensions are wrong becuase it is not the right manual for the bike.
