Check fuses and look for any loose wires first. Is it just the Speedo, or are the tach and other idiot lights out too?

Is it the kind that cycles when you first turn the ignition on?

O.K. call me nuts but the first thing I'd check is the battery. And after that the stator. When you're revving the piss outta these things it can take more juice than the bike produces at times. I've seen bikes do some really weird shit when the battery was getting low -- one being the gauges went nutz occasionally.
